The appointment of Pascal Lamy should be greeted with gratitude
While Downing Street and the Foreign Office were breaking out the champagne at Friday’s news that Neil Kinnock and Chris Patten had got top jobs at the new Brussels Commission, Washington rang. The Americans wanted to know whether the British thought Pascal Lamy would be a problem.
